Frequently Asked Questions

How does acupuncture work?

Originating over 3,000 years ago, acupuncture is a safe, drug-free medicine that triggers your body's natural healing mechanisms by inserting hair-thin needles into specific points. Modern research shows that the needles interact with your fascia (connective tissue) and nervous system to boost circulation, lower inflammation, and shift you from "fight or flight" into deep "rest and repair" mode. Rather than just chasing symptoms like pain or stress, we use traditional diagnosis to find and treat the root cause of your imbalance.

What can acupuncture help with?

Acupuncture is highly effective for a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional concerns. People frequently seek treatment for chronic pain, anxiety, stress, digestive disorders, hormonal issues, fatigue, migraines, insomnia... the list goes on! Because Five Element Acupuncture treats the whole person, patients often notice secondary health benefits improving alongside their main complaint.

What makes Five Element Acupuncture different from other types of acupuncture?

While standard acupuncture often focuses on relieving isolated physical symptoms, Five Element Acupuncture targets the root cause of your illness. It is based on the principle that health relies on balancing five natural elements within us: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. By identifying your unique elemental pattern, we treat your mind, body, and spirit as one connected system. This approach creates profound, long-lasting wellness rather than just temporary symptom relief.

Where do the needles go?

Acupuncture points are located all over the body, but the most frequently used points are on your lower arms, hands, lower legs, and feet. Because the body's energy pathways are fully interconnected, placing a needle in your leg or foot can effectively treat an issue in your back, head, or digestive system. I will always explain exactly where the needles are going before your treatment begins so you feel completely comfortable.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Not at all like a medical injection. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin, flexible, and completely solid. Most patients feel only a brief, minor sensation as they are placed, sometimes followed by a dull ache, heaviness, or a mild tingling (which is great, as this shows that it is working!). Many people find the treatment so relaxing that they fall asleep on the couch, something we call an 'acu-nap'!

How many treatments will I need?

The results of acupuncture are cumulative, which means that each treatment builds on the progress of the ones before it. Because everyone responds uniquely, your treatment plan will be entirely tailored to you. For recent or acute conditions, a few sessions may be enough. For long-standing or chronic health issues, a commitment of 6 to 8 weekly appointments is typically needed to create lasting change. As your symptoms improve, your sessions will be spaced further apart.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, absolutely. Acupuncture is an exceptionally safe, natural, and non-invasive form of healthcare. As a fully qualified practitioner, I adhere to strict professional standards and use only sterile, single-use, disposable needles, ensuring the highest level of hygiene and patient safety.

Can I claim the cost back on health insurance?

Yes, in many cases. The British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) is recognised by many leading private health insurance providers. Because every policy is different, I recommend contacting your provider before your first session to confirm if acupuncture is covered under your specific plan and to find out how to reclaim your costs.

What should I wear to my appointment?

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing. For most treatments, I will need easy access to your lower legs, feet, forearms, and hands, so trousers and sleeves that can easily roll up past your knees and elbows are ideal.

How should I prepare for my session?

Aside from wearing loose clothing, it is best to eat a light meal or snack an hour or two before you arrive so that you are not receiving treatment on an empty stomach. Try to avoid caffeine right before your appointment, and refrain from drinking alcohol on the day of your session.

What should I do after my treatment?

To get the most out of your session, it is ideal to take things easy for the rest of the day. Drink plenty of water, avoid strenuous workouts or intense gym sessions immediately afterward, and allow your body the quiet time it needs to process the treatment.
